Physical Description

The draconis is a family of winged lizards which vary in size and coloration, but share the same structural appearance. A draconis is a winged lizard, similar to a dragon, but much smaller and lacks the characteristic breath weapon.

Combat

In combat, all draconi use their claws and fangs to good affect. The desert draconis is an able fighter, but the forest drake and the greater draconis fight only when hunting or in self defense.

Habitat

The habitat of the draconi varies with subspecies. The forest drake lives up to its name in the protective shelter of wooded lands. The desert draconis prefers warm and dry environments and can be found in large numbers in the baen desert and throughout the sentinel mountains. The greater draconis prefers mountainous regions. All draconi build nests with whatever barks, leaves and branches may be gathered from local vegetation.

Ecology

All drakes are omnivores. They are solitary except when they mate. There are several distinct subspecies of the draconis.

Forest Drake

Also known as the forest drake. The smallest of the draconi is a winged lizard no larger than a dog. These miniature dragons are omnivores and are well suited to training. The forest drake is too small to serve as a steed for most races and is too timid to be useful in battle. Forest drakes usually have green scales and blue or black eyes. Most are about four feet long. Despite its name, this species can be found in many areas including tropical rain forest, swamps, plains and woods. They are able to learn many commands and tricks. They usually become attached to one owner when they are tamed

Golden Drake

Perhaps the most rare of all drakes, the golden drake has shimmering metallic gold scales and is smaller than all other species of drake. Highly magical, the golden drake is said to boost the powers of any mage that is able to lure and keep one. The blood, heart and scales of the creature are also said to be valuable alchemical components. The golden drake is typically three feet long and weighs about 50 pounds. A few rare and lucky mages have managed to acquire a golden drake as a familiar.

Polar Drake

Also known as snow drakes and frostfangs, the polar drake is the largest of the drakes. It has an eight foot wing span, weighs 300 pounds and is easily recognized by its snow white scales.

The polar drake is the most violent and brutal of all drakes. Fiercely independent, they tolerate others of their kind only when mating. It is primarily a carnivore and a very fierce fighter. It is the least intelligent of all drakes as well, preferring direct combat. The polar drake has an effective breath weapon. Once every thirty seconds or so, the polar drake is able to exhale a frosty blast of cold vapor. This ability is biological, rather than magical. The polar drake is occasionally tamed and kept as pets by the Borrellians.
