Physical Description

This mammoth blade is a magnificent two-handed sword. A full 6 and a half feet long from tip to pommel, it weights about 35 pounds. The four-and-a-half foot blade is smooth, and bears a curious "M" near the cross guard on each side. The sword is a fascinating mix of metal alloys, precious stones, minerals, and magic. The cross guard is shaped like a hawk, its eyes are made of fire agate. The pommel contains a removable dagger with a 1'6" blade.

History

This monstrous sword was crafted by a highly talented bladesmith in the turbulent years following the Great War. The bladesmith, Megalindir, engraved the blade with an M. His greatest creation was a sword of unimaginable power, which he gave as a gift to a Traxxian military commander, as payment for some age old favor. Numerous vain attacks were made on the noble, who fell his opponents with ease, aided by the strength of his sword. The attacks came more frequently, with increasing intensity.

Finally, fearing that the blade would fall into the wrong hands, the commander bade Megalindir to destroy it. Megalindir took the sword, but could not bring it upon himself to destroy such a magnificent work. In hopes that one day a warrior more worthy would possess it, he hid the blade away beneath his smithy. Later in the war, he was slain and his smithy ransacked. It is assumed that the blade was found and taken. It has been seen in different realms over the centuries. It's current whereabouts are unknown.

Enchantment

Megalindir is self-sharpening and self-cleaning so that it is forever razor sharp and sparkling. The sword is heavy, yet comfortable to wield. In combat, the sword seems to speed the movements of its wielder, and know exactly how to turn, shift, and sway to ensure a devastating hit.

Whenever it strikes something, it lets out a loud, vibrating echo. This unique vibration makes it especially effective when the blade bites into flesh. If Megalindir strikes another blade, it will do one of two things: if the opponent's blade is non-magical, it will likely shatter. If the opponent's blade is magical, Megalindir will try to absorb the magical energy from the other blade, rendering it non-magical for a few seconds will recharging itself.

Heavily enchanted by holy energies, Megalindir does additional damage to any undead or demonic creature.

The blade is semi-sentient, and can understand numerous commands.

bulletThe blade is forged of adamantium and holds an incredibly keen edge.
bulletCenter strip of orichalcum runs the length of the blade. This allows the sword to absorb magical energy directed at the wielder and store the magical energy. This stored energy can be used to unleash a narrow beam of energy as an attack. It can even be used to fuel the wielder's spells (if the wielder is a spell caster). The appropriate command word must be used.
bulletAt the center of the cross guard are two gemstones. A methkari crystal on one side and a firlyncris (life crystal) on the other. Each of these two stones is sensitive to specific types of energy - the methkari detects magic and the firlyncris detects life energy. These gemstones have been ingeniously crafted into the weapon and allow the wielder to detect magic or life respectively in a directional cone (the direction the sword is pointing). If life or magic is detected, the sword will hum softly and the appropriate gem will glow. The strength of the glow indicates the strength of the energy source. This function can be turned on and off by a command word.
bulletThe handle, cross guard and pommel are fashioned of shadow steel. They will not conduct heat or electricity. Magical heat and electricity that affects the sword will be absorbed by the orichalcum.
