Description

Bren'Tarr is the most powerful and most commonly worshipped borrellian god. He rules the heavens and the lands and the seas below. He rules the moons, the stars and the winds. All other gods pay homage to him. The axe he carries, Flame Eater, is said to be indestructible and ice storms erupt with every swing. His fur cloak is made from the first snowpaw and is magically enchanted such that no weapon can pierce it.

History

When the world was young, it was engulfed in the madness of war when all tribes across all realms fought on endless battlefields. To escape this mad, Bren'Tarr, a great chieftain, led his people to the mountainous north lands. Here, they settled, far from the wars. It is said that after he led his people to the Malus Mountains, he taught them all they would need to know: how to hunt and which plants were good to eat, how to summon fire in the strongest winds and protect themselves from the cold. From his people, he selected the first hatraddi and taught them the ice magic and the ways of Nature. Then he left them to go on as he would. He climbed up into the Malus Mountains and began to climb the tallest, which is now called Bren'Tarr's Peak. His wife, Vurenga, went with him. Many of the borrellians tried to follow him, but were forced to turn back when the air became too thin and cold. Bren'Tarr continued up and up and as all borrellians watched, he disappeared above the clouds, still climbing. Borrellians adamantly cling to the belief that Bren'Tarr climbed straight up into another world - a realm above the clouds. He then pushed the mountain down so that mortals could not follow.

Religion

Priests of Bren'Tarr wear heavy fur cloaks and wield solid ice axes as does their lord. Each priest carves his own axe from naturally occurring ice. He then places the axe in a roaring fire and prayers over it for one full night. If he has been faithful and is worthy, the weapon will not melt and Bren'Tarr is pleased with his servant. From that day forth, the axe is carried with the priest always and it is a sign of his faith and service. The enchanted ice is exceptionally strong and the jagged edge is very sharp. Warmth, not even fire, will cause the weapon to melt. However, if ever the priest betrays Bren'Tarr, breaks his vows as a priest or displeases the god in any way, the weapon will melt and the priest is cast out of the church.

Temples to Bren'Tarr are large structures made of hewn logs. Such temples are long rectangular halls built about a central fire pit. Usually there is one Bren'Tarrian temple in each borrellian community of significant size. Usually about three to six priests of Bren'Tarr live and worship at each temple. The greatest of these temples is built at the foot of Bren'Tarr's peak.
