Description

Semorjon is the common god of the sea and the patron deity of all sailors, shipwrights, fishermen and all those who make their living by the sea. He is depicted as a short human male, bald headed and clean shaven, with pale blue eyes, weathered features and gnarled hands. He is renowned for an unshakable calmness. He is the quintessential mariner and is said to sail all the seas endlessly in a sailing ship named the Sea Walker which is manned by the souls of those who die at sea.

Religion

The church of Semorjon is a loosely knit brotherhood of mariner priests who live and work on docks and ships. There are no grand temples to this deity, no elaborate rituals or ceremonies. Only common beliefs and practices unite these men and women. They are all excellent seamen and they all love the sea. Most Semorjon priests live in port cities and work the docks, but many go out on regular shipping runs. A handful live adventurous lives, moving from port to port.

Most priests make themselves useful in port towns supporting themselves by fishing or mending sails. Semorjon priests pass on their love of the sea to others in their teachings. It is not uncommon to find a priest of this god teaching a group of students basic boating, swimming, seamanship, knot tying and other nautical skills. Semorjon priests often carry anti-sea sickness herbal remedies to ease the suffering of landlubbers. In larger cities, semorjon priests are often called upon to bless a ship before departing port, especially before a long voyage. Such a blessing is always requested when a new ship is christened. Sailors will often give a quick prayer to Semorjon before a voyage. Many oaths and curses used by sailors invoke Semorjon's name.

Some larger vessels carry a semorjon priest as a permanent member of the crew who ministers to the needs of the crew, heals the sick, uses magic to bless and repair the boat, helps keep up morale, tells tales of sea adventure to entertain the crew and more.

In the harbor of the City of Freeport, there exists the only structure which could be considered a Semorjon temple. It is a a large stone building that sits on a tiny islet no larger than the building. This gives the impression of a stone building sitting coming right out of the waves. This "temple" is called Ile Semorj, is home to a dozen semorjon priests and sits about one mile out in the harbor. Many ships entering and leaving Freeport harbor will dock at Ile Semorj to ask for a blessing or offer thanks.
