Physical Description

The unicorn appears as a slender horse with a snow white coat and a single spiral horn projecting from its forehead. Typically only 1.2 meters (4 ft) high at the shoulder, these animals have silvery-white manes and brilliant blue eyes. They travel very swiftly and silently through the forest. They are very intelligent and can be trained to respond to dozens of spoken or gestural commands.

The elves have a very strong association with the unicorn, especially in the Kingdom of Ethara, upon whose royal standard the animal appears. Some elves even ride unicorns as steeds.

Unicorns and elves are perfectly matched. Elves and slender and lightweight. Likewise, unicorns are not strong and cannot carry anyone heavier than an elf.

Unicorns will only allow elves to ride them and, even then, only those elves they know and trust.

Combat

Unicorns are fast, silent and sure-footed in the forest. They can easily gallop across the most treacherous footing, be it a fallen tree or the stones in a river. Because of their slim bodies and smaller stature, they can fit though small spaces where a regular horse cannot go. Unicorns will always flee from danger and will only fight if they have no other option or if they are carrying a rider. If forced to fight, they can deliver vicious kicks, bites and the spiral horn can be used to impale enemies.

Unicorns can be trained for battle and their elven warriors have been known to take them into combat. However, unicorns are prized creatures and elven warriors will avoid battle if the odds are against them and the unicorn would be at too great a risk.

Geographic Distribution and Habitat

Unicorns are found only in western Ithria. They roam wild and free in deep forest, far from civilized lands.

Large elven communities will sometimes have one or two trained unicorns.

They are almost never encountered outside of deep forests or elven communities.

Ecology

Generally speaking, unicorns look, act and interact with their environment like normal horses.

The horn of the unicorn is rumored to be a powerful alchemical ingredient if ground down to a powder. As such, unicorns are sometimes hunted by unscrupelous hunters and their horns sold to evil sorcerers. Elves are extremely protective of unicorns and will deal with such hunters ruthlessly. Because of this and the rarity of the unicorns, ground unicorn powder is incredibly rare and exorbitantly expensive.
