Physical Description

The gryphon is an unusual creature that appears as an unholy melding of an eagle and a lion. The creature is a quadruped and has the rear body, hind legs and tail of a lion. However, the fore body is feathered and the fore limbs are avian and end in taloned claws. The neck and head is that of a giant eagle with a large golden beak, feathers and so on. Sprouting from the back are a pair of large eagle wings. The creature is 4 meters from the tip of its beak to the tip of its lion tail. It has a 6 meter wing span.

Combat

Gryphons move and attack very much like lions. They use their forward avian claws and beak to attack. They will use their flight to good advantage in battle and will take to the air and flee if a fight is going badly for them.

Geographic Distribution and Habitat

Gryphons inhabit mountain ranges across the world. They make their nests at high altitude, but will fly down to the lower hills and valleys to hunt.

Typically, gryphons will only be encountered one at a time. When a mated pair nest, one will usually protect the nest while the other hunts.

Ecology

It is widely agreed amongst wizards and scholars that the gryphon is the product of magical experimentation. It was most likely created as a biological weapon during the Great War. The exact identity of the creator is unknown, as is which pre-War nation may be responsible. It is assumed that the first gryphons escaped captivity during the war and managed to survive and thrive in the wild.

Gryphons have been known to attack lone travelers and small groups. Such attacks are usually on remote mountain roads far from civilization. Thankfully, gryphons are are.

Notes

Gryphon feathers make excellent quills. Gryphon hatchlings have been captured and attempts have been made to tame them and use them as flying steeds. Such attemps have failed. The gryphon is a notoriously foul tempered beast and most agree that the creature will never be domesticated.

Like all avians, gryphons have excellent eyesight.
