Title: The Languages of Khoras
Post by: avisarr on December 02, 2007, 11:40:01 PM
This is in response to a comment made by Djelukh. He asked about writing samples for all of the languages, not just the magical coding systems. I originally wanted it to be the September spotlight. It took a long time, but I finally got around to it. I have done some work on the Languages section. You can now find a graphic showing the language families and how languages relate to one another. More importantly, 10 languages (Avarese, Baenese, Chaddi, Dwarven, Elvish, Magrakian, Northern, Ogrish, Rukemian and Southern) all have actual samples of the writing, if you're curious what they look like. I have created just samples... and just those 10 for now. Later on, I may create other samples. However, I do not plan on actually creating whole fictional languages. It's simply too much work. I will leave that up to others, if they wish to pursue it. For now, general descriptions and some samples of text are, I think, enough for the average game master to work with. I do hope this helps and I hope you like them. I'm officially taking this one off my "to do" list. :)

i agree...its really TOO much work for what its worth...most adventures never use more than a few lines of a lanugauge
anyways..or maybe small poems or riddles...i'm my world i use it mainly to label towns and things like "river" "mountain"
"ocean" or an animal...like in my world "dragon" = "kaj'du"   lizard bird...

and if you used an automated method(i do) everything turns out
looking somewhat similar and i could NEVER get the automated method
to generate anything other then the A B C alphabet...

when you use an automated one..its really hard to create related words too
like you and your......can look totally different...

doing 1 language can take a year or more to get it all looking real and functioning real
if your world has a few dozen(as it should) were talking 20 years to get it right the
non-automated way...

if however you want to borrow one and slap it into your adventure there are a few 100
here: www.langmaker.com and they have fancy ones that don't look like english too....

yeah it takes a lot, especially when you aren't using real-world bases.
