So, as I've mentioned earlier, I have spent the last two months or so converting the underlying programming code of the Khoras website. I've abandoned some very old (bad) code that served as the foundation of the Khoras website for more than 10 years. I've been replacing it with much better (and more modern) code. It really needed it.
I know that some of you guys don't care, but the forum has been a bit quiet lately and I'm in the mood to ramble. :)
Overall, I'm really please with how things have gone. I ended up breaking the conversion into two parts. The first part was to replace the old Frontpage HTMl with clean CSS based HTML code. It's gone well. Almost all of the pages have already been converted. There are a few pieces of text here and there that got a little messed up. Formatting issues and text size mostly. But it's not too bad. You may have noticed many pages looking a little different over the past few weeks. I've been cleaning up the code by hand and I'm almost done. I'm spending a lot of time on the Cities and Nations section because, in my opinion, those are two important sections of the site. So essentially, Phase 1 is complete. Just tidying up a few things.
The next phase will be to dump the frames and switch over to something called "SSI" - server side includes. Now, this will help Khoras in several ways - you'll be able to bookmark specific pages within the Khoras site. Also, it'll help Khoras in the search engine ranks. Search engine spiders will be able to crawl throughout the Khoras site and reach the deep levels once Phase 2 is complete.
The down side of Phase 2 is that the menu structure will look different. But change is good. We've had this layout for awhile. I've got an accordian style menu picked out that I like a lot. It'll probably take some tinkering before the new design settles, but I think it will eventually look pretty good.
So, sorry for the rambling. Been working on this for awhile and it's still got another month or two to go. Khoras will see a serious growth spurt afterwards as a result of all this work. Look for lots of changes coming soon.
That's all. More to come... hope everyone is doing well.
Thanks for the progress report David, I was just wondering how close the site was to being converted. :P
I have to admit I'm partial to the menus, but I trust your judgement on what will be better for the site.
I noticed that the font has changed during this conversion...I like look of the site and I think the conversion will be a success.
Since I'm over 40, the bigger font helps me read the site easier.
Keep up the great work David.
Thanks. It's slow going, but it's going well.
Greetings David,
I notice the new font color for the links is hard for me to see. Has anyone else mentioned this? A darker shade of blue would be much easier on the eyes. IMO
Let me see what I can do...
Hey Golanthius,
Do you still find the link color hard to read? I'm not sure what web browser you use, but most of them can customize the colors. I know for a fact that Internet Explorer let's you set the link and visited link colors to whatever you want. At least version 8 does. I bet most other browsers can too. So, will that fix the problem?
I was able to change the colors...thx David for pointing that out...BTW I use Firefox as my browser.
