Title: Life Crystal
Post by: Delbareth on March 25, 2014, 05:22:53 AM
Hi!

I have some interrogations about the life crystal. I never used it because I was never satisfied with it.
This crystal is supposed to detect life, but how could it be used?  ???
If anyone hold this crystal (or stand close to look at it), it will react firstly to THIS person before anything else.

I precise that I don't like the possibility to build a life detector with lead (one of my player already tried to build a flashlight with a powerful glowstone and surrounding material). I don't like that because it uses a nowadays idea.

Well I guess it could be used when placed above a door, like a doorbell (another nowadays idea). But it's not very practical.

Has any one of you ever used lifestone? If yes, how?

Yes, you are absolutely correct... anyone holding the life crystal would "set it off" and it would detect the person holding the life crystal. It seems rather pointless, doesn't it?

Would you like me to add more to that page to clarify things? Maybe I will... but for now, just for fun, and to kick-start the conversation, here are three possible explanations, any one of which could be true:

1. The life crystal is a naturally occurring crystal. It was never "intended" to be used for anything. It just is. It has always been. Through a combination of chemistry, pressure, time and eons of bombardment by the exotic radiation from the Khorasian star, this crystal forms naturally like many other substances. This crystal just has this unusual sensitivity. Many have tried to harness the crystal and its unusual property to create something useful: a hand held instrument (with appropriate shielding so as not to detect the user), a perimeter warning system, an alchemical ingredient in certain specific potions, a spell component for certain spells and so forth. Many have tried. Most have failed. Perhaps a few have met with varying levels of success.

2. The life crystal WAS created... long ago, but its creation was flawed. The resulting crystal was not what its creator had in mind. Alchemists and sorcerers have studied it, but found little useful application for it. The crystal has passed down through the centuries as little more than a curiosity.

3. The life crystal was created long ago and it was a success. It functioned exactly as intended. The crystal, however, was not intended to be used by the living.

I like all your explanations.
In fact I feared it was some sort of Dunjeon-like famous stuff (if you remember I don't like/play (A)DD[1-4])  ;)
