Session 35 - Ambush

Previously, the party had gone to the "Hole in the Wall" tavern. There they had met the guild master of the local chapter of the thieves guild. They saw the chalkboard in the main drinking hall where bets were being placed on the "Outlanders" and the "Skull and Dagger" – two foreign groups heading into the Desolation. Obviously the player party and the Duthelm group, respectively.

The party found out, from the guild master, about a small Duthelm group in town and that they had been inquiring about the players. Then they found out that the Duthelm group was heading over to intercept the players. The party left and set up an ambush in the warehouse district down by the docks.

The players established themselves up on the rooves of the warehouses on both sides of the street. They prepared themselves with steel and spell and created the perfect ambush. I wish I had notes from this session, but unfortunately, I don't. All I can tell you is that this single fight took pretty much the whole session.

The players, even with NPCs, were less than 10. They were ambushing a group of over 20 men. But they had superior firepower and the element of surprise.

It was a tremendous battle. It ranged across three roof tops and two streets. Toward the end, it became a running battle. The Duthelm group was augmented by some local hired thugs. But even with that advantage, these common soldiers were no match for the heroes. The Duthelm group and their lackeys were wiped out. During the battle, one of the Duthelm soldiers dropped to his knees and morphed into a great black cat and sprinted away. A shapeshifter! Judging by the surprised look on the faces of the doomed Duthelm soldiers, it seemed clear that their group had been infiltrated by a morphian.

After the battle, the party rolled the bodies and cleaned their blades. They found little of interest. It turned out that these were common soldiers, nothing more.

After a quick departure, the party then quickly purchased some needed supplies and made preparations for the long journey ahead of them.
