Session 27 – Aftermath of the Battle at Lord Verran's Estate

After the battle with the four morphians are Lord Verran's estate, the characters took stock of their situation and cleaned up the aftermath of the battle.

To organize things, the bodies of all those who had died were laid out in the courtyard. The loss was severe. The dead included Lord Verran, the Lady Verran, their daughter, the House Wizard and a dozen house guards and officers.

Among the still living were the House Warlord, the House Herald, the House Scribe, the Chamberlain, the Captain of the Guard and about two dozen miscellaneous house guards, officers, servants and craftsmen.

During the battle, Ugita had used a Destruction spell on one morphian. The destruction spell completely obliterated the morphian. Ugita went up to the roof to see if anything was left. He found a single piece of the morphian which was already crystallizing. (Morphians, upon the death, return to their natural gelatinous state of red ooze. This red gel crystallizes in the presence of oxygen to form a crystal known as chrylomar which radiates a weak energy field which prevents morphians from shapeshifting).

The party compared notes with each other and concluded that they had been facing at least four separate morphians.

Besides the one that Nathan destroyed with the Destruction spell, Mark had crossed swords with one and only lost him when the morpian shifted into a black cat and sped off into the night.

Likewise, Gen had pursued one and thrown a light spell on it, but it also fled in the form of a great cat.

Gen and Ugita took a close look at the poison in the wounds of the deceased. Gen, who was skilled in alchemy and the tools of thievery, took a sample of the poison to the lab of the House Wizard and used his tools and reagents. She soon identified the poison as veshkari. A potent poison.

Ugita studied the body of Lord Verran with spells. Ugita was a very powerful priest and his clan's chief diety was a god of death. Ugita himself, a powerful necromancer priest, actually did have the ability to bring back the dead. [It should be noted that I and Nathan, who was running Ugita, had seriously modified the Resurrection spell. We made it MUCH tougher to resurrect someone. Essentially, you have to sacrifice someone of approximately equal level].

Ugita explained the sacrifice that was required to bring back Lord Verran. The warlord offered up his life without hesitation. However, when Ugita made preparations and began the spell, he quickly found that the spell would fail. The vital connection between body and spirit had been studied. Ugita went to his god in prayer and the underworld revealed that a special magic item had been used to prevent resurrection. It seems that the morphians that had attacked made sure that Lord Verran was killed and that he would STAY dead.

The party made preparations to leave while the Chamberlain and House Herald dealt with having to bury the entire noble family and inform the authorities. It seemed that the party would have to look elsewhere for a guide.
