Session 03 - The Journey to the Besieged City of Myranor

Having prepared themselves, the heroes (Callister, Rothgar, Martin, the brothers Ugita and Mutaki and Katharana) leave on their journey. They traveled by ship to the besieged coastal city of Myranor. Their ship anchored some ten miles out and the characters took a rowboat in to shore. They did this in the morning, early, with the misty fog. As they approached, Callister noticed that his tattoos were starting to glow and react to some outside magical source. The glow brightened alarmingly as they got closer to shore. Of course, the tattoos were reacting to the energy field being generated by those strange wagon mounted devices. Just then, the characters heard the sounds of orcish laughter and the creak of sails. A ship was approaching, although the heroes could not see the vessel because of the thick morning fog and the pre-dawn darkness. Fearing discovery, they piled blankets and cloaks on top of the brightly glowing Callister. The characters heard a large ship pass by, very close by. They can smell the ale. The huge ship sailed on. The heroes remained undiscovered.

The characters had previously studied the history of Myranor and found that it was built on top of the ruins of an older city. Part of the construction included an extensive sewer network that took advantage of canals of the previous city. The characters landed the boat on the rocky shore near the harbor and began making their way along the slippery black rocks. As they approached the sewer entrance, they saw a dim glow in the distance and heard a strange repetitive pulsing sound. The characters, curious as new born kittens, happily trudged through the mud toward the sound. They came upon a camp of sleeping orcs. In the distance, they could just make out one of the strange wagon mounted devices. It consisted of a massive spiked ball floating in mid air inches above the wagon and rotating while four arms of metal surrounded the sphere and rotated in the other direction. Having seen the device, the characters were satisfied. They decided against approaching closer because the enemy was all about them. They headed back to the coast and continued toward the sewer entrance.

They decided to go in through the sewer system. They used a group invisibility spell to sneak past the group of orcs that are camped at the entrance to the sewer.

During these first few hours of infiltrating the region, including the approach to the sewers and finally in the sewers, the characters attempted several spells. Remember, the siege army had those wagon mounted devices that interferes with magic. The characters discovered that those devices were outputting an energy field that "scrambled" a spell. Each spell cast in the region would be rendered unpredictably. Sometimes the spell would simply dissipate harmlessly. Other times it would backfire with dangerous results. Sometimes it would create a completely random effect. The characters learned that the more they cast spells, the better they chance was of having their spell fire normally. However, it was a slow progression. It would take hundreds of spells to figure it out. And in the meantime, each spell they attempted was a roll of the dice.

As the characters made their way through the ancient sewer system, they encountered a number of closed gates, locked portcullis and other obstacles. All about them was the stench of death and decay. They trudged through knee deep filth.
At one point a giant spider leapt from its lair and attacked, but it was quickly killed.
Not long later, the heroes were confronted by a group of saurian soldiers who were mapping out the sewers for their Duthelm masters. The fight was fierce, but brief and the heroes were victorious.
Finally, the group was ambushed by a group of grotesque humanoid things – faceless creatures covered in slime and gore. These were sewer zombies. The party slew them.

Myranor has two city walls that divides the city into three section: the outer city, the middle city and the inner city. A river runs around the inner city, just outside the wall, like a large flowing moat. The middle city had already fallen to the siege army. So when the characters reach the end of the sewer and came to an entrance, they were facing the challenge of crossing the river. All the while, they were still in Duthelm held territory.

With stealth, the heroes were crossed the river, overcame a locked door and quickly sealed it after them. They navigated through the sewer system of the inner city and eventually made it into the inner city where they made contact with the Kitaran soldiers therein. Success. They had managed to get past the siege and into the city.
