Phoneme The smallest variation of sound that can alter meaning.
Morpheme A group of sounds that constitute a word or word part and carry meaning. Complex morphemes may be short, but carry a very specific concept or mean a very specific thing, such as "a trophy taken from slain enemy who was beheaded with a single blow". Simple morphemes carry a simple meaning, like "snow".
Pitch Variations in tone and voice that carry meaning.
Prefix A morpheme added to the beginning of a word that modifies meaning.
Suffix A morpheme added to the end of a word that modifies meaning.
Social Dialect A subdivision of a language spoken by a certain group or social class.
Geographic Dialect A subdivision of a language spoken in a certain geographic area.
