The Rise of the Alliance

294 TIC - 364 TIC

"Historians name this age for the group that would later change history. From a private club to the most powerful guild of mages to ever walk this world or any other, the history of the Alliance is well known. Who would have thought that from such humble beginnings would come the bane of the world? It seems Fate plays us all for fools."

- Cal Tarik, Lore Master and Historian, Ithell

Near the end of the third century on the Thullian Imperial Calendar, Ozryk, a direct Ranyku descendent, was born. He followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and studied the ways of magic. Ozryk was a very talented sorcerer, more so than the average Thullian wizards.

In 341 TIC, Ozryk and twelve of his closest friends formed a private club for mages only. The club met to share mystical knowledge and practice the art that they all loved. Ozryk and his friends were quite skilled and sought Imperial financial backing. However, Thull IX opposed the idea of involving the government with a organization devoted to an art which few could wield. He also differed with many of the group’s philosophical beliefs.

Ozryk drew many young mages to the Alliance. Despite its growing size, true power eluded the group until Thull X, the Emperor’s son, joined. Thull’s membership was kept hidden until one of the emperor’s advisors discovered it and alerted the Emperor. The resulting confrontation ended with the Emperor ordering that the group be disbanded. Only the intervention of Thull X prevented summary execution for all members. Unknown to the Empire, the Alliance continued "underground".

Two years later, Emperor Thull IX was killed by during a hunting expedition. His son immediately underwent the Thullian Ritual of Imperial Ascension. Due to his love of learning, magic and study, he was widely known as Thull X, the Wise.

With a sympathetic ear on the throne, the Alliance enjoyed extensive financial and political support. Ozryk declared that the Alliance was the only legal and politically endorsed magical association. In 349 TIC, the Alliance began forcibly disbanding other magical groups. This was known as the Purifications Campaigns. Many small armed conflicts erupted between these magical groups involving offensive magic, hired thugs, assassins and worse. Some of these conflicts became quite bloody. Uncooperative groups were wiped out. Torture and execution were widely used to convert or destroy non-Alliance mages. Renegade wizards were hunted down and killed. Most respectable historians agree that this was a tragic period in Thullian history.

A very militant mage named Jakar decided that aggressive and organized resistance was the only way to stop the spread of the Alliance. In 358 TIC, Jakar united many of renegade mages and magical groups who alone were powerless to resist the Empire. This group was called Jakar’s Renegades, but eventually became known simply as the Jakar.

In 364 TIC, Emperor Thull X became terribly ill. As his health dwindled, Alliance members met with him in his bed chambers many times. It is believed that the Alliance took advantage of the situation and influenced the Emperor to implement several taxes, trade agreements and imperial laws that would greatly benefit them. Within two months of the onset of the illness, Emperor Thull X died.
