The World Of Khoras - History

The Sundering

"No other event in all history is so central, so global as is the Sundering. In a single day, it reshaped the world, reforged the heavens and rewrote the histories and calendars of man. It swept o'er the world leaving no thing untouched. It was and is the great equalizer. It divides the present from the past. It cleaves what is from what could have been. It is the forge of ages. It is the crucible of our world."

- Cal Tarik, Lore Master and Historian, Ithell

By the end of the year 469, the energy buildup had become so severe that an instability in the very core of the star was noted. It was then that the magical surges began. This phenomena increased exponentially as the months passed. This effect was felt in neighboring nations and drew official protest from the Irenni League,  the Traxx Legion and others. Problems continued as the Focusing moved into the 470th year of the Thullian Empire and six days into the month of Landthrive, the Focusing collapsed. Ten years into the Focusing, Drellikar was sundered.

The star, Drellikar, physically split into two separate stars. Texts from this period state that a tremendous flash from the sun was seen the world over. Scholars theorize that the outer layer of the star was blown off. This catalyst initiated a chain reaction within the star. The magical energy that the Focusing had been affecting was drawn forth as a large gaseous mass of plasma. The remaining mass of Drellikar formed into a radiant cloud of hydrogen. These two masses slowly began to draw apart. Fusion continued in the star, but the energy output fluctuated greatly. In later centuries, this catastrophe would become known as the Great Sundering.

Such was the intensity of the Sundering that several dozen of the mages involved in the casting were struck dead at the climax of the separation. The Core exploded in a tremendous fireball which utterly obliterated the Assembly Hall. A fiery shock wave erupted from the building and swept through the valley of Baen, destroying everything in its path. Thousands died.

Texts from this period state that the sky changed color and the planet shook. The enormous shifts in gravity caused by the stellar fission altered the axis tilt and orbit of the planet. Despite precautions and tremendous amounts of resources being thrown into a desperate attempt to abort the spell at the last minute, the catastrophe continued unchecked. The "static" which the Mage Lords had been trying to focus was a thousand times worse than what it had been. As a result, magic across the realms became extremely unstable with wild fluctuations in power. To the inhabitants of Khoras, it seemed the end of the world had come.

Shortly after the Sundering, the energy mass which had formerly been Drellikar cooled and coalesced into two separate stars. A blue dwarf which became known as Drellis and a yellow giant called Karrym. Shortly after this, magical fluctuations began to stabilize.
